rooms by the sea

Here is "rooms by the sea", a painting from Edward Hopper made in 1951, this is one of his biggest works of art in terms of size. Edward Hopper had born the 22th july 1882 and died in 1967,his style is the american realism, he often depict the daily life of the middle class, nostalgia, feeling of loneliness, nature and modern society.

Rooms by the sea however is a bit different than the usual most known paintings that he made. We can see the hall of a house, showing a little bit of a living room, the design is quit simple and classical, there is nobody in this house. But the real key element comes from the door. It is open, and lead directly to the ocean, just like the house were floating on it like a boat, which is totally unrealistic, yet fabulous. The light coming from the outside also give this kind of magickal and unique atmosphere, it give a sense of pureness.

Here is my interpretation of the painting. I think the house would represent the kind of routine, boring life of people in general, they don't go out, they work, they are serious and all. The house is about human society, people who see only their problems only stay in their own little world their little bubble and don't see beyond. The opened door which bring the light and lead directly to the sea, suggest that there is still beautiful things in life to explore and that we have to open ourselves to these, we have to open our mind, dream and hope for the best, instead of staying in our tiny closed little house, in our boring stuff.

I came to this interpretation as well because most of the hopper's paintings are a bit depressing as i said before so maybe he wanted to change from usual and make something more dreamy, there is really a contrast with many of his other paintings, and we can see this contrast with the light in the painting. So i thought it was interesting to choose this one apart from the fact that i find it pretty.
